Park Rapids Fishing Report

9-22-18

Now is the best time of the year to get out a catch some fish! As fewer people are out on the lakes and with the cooler lake temps fish put on the feed bag getting ready for winter!

Walleye-  Your best bet to catch a couple walleyes this time of year is to fish the wind or be willing to fish deep. Wind blown points and weedbeds have been productive when we do have wind and windless days calling for heavier deeper tackle. 22-24 foot range seems to be holding on with fisherman trolling bottom bouncers with 1 1/2 to 2 ounce weights. Minnows and crawlers are the best live bait options otherwise trolling cranks or jig raps in deeper water.

Panfish- The crappie bite has really picked up in the area even as they move out to those deeper cabbage points and flats. Hair jigs or bobber setups with a wax or crappie minnow have been most productive. Typically if you find one good fish, you'll find a number of good fish with it!

Pike - Live bait rigs with a larger sucker minnow will put fish in the boat. Also a larger float with a minnow is very effective. For those wanting to fish artificial a white spinner bait or chatter bait wont let you down! Target cabbage beds and and weed beds off points for those better pike! Remember to checkout the new limits for pike as well!

Muskie - Leech Lake, Mantrap, and Many Point have all been producing some action. Fish fast and cover water until active fish are found. Burning bucktails or working fast moving topwaters have been key. Work weed edges and rocks for muskie hang outs.

Leech lake Report - Leech has really picked up lately. Sand flats in 14 to 18 have been the most consistent as they move into their fall patterns. But as always its all about the wind on Leech Lake make sure to fish the wind blown points and dropoffs for best results. Trolling spinners and crankbaits has been very effective to cover ground and find fish. Bobber fishing at night on the humps has kicked out some fish as well!

Make sure to stop in and check out our bait selection from minnows to crawlers to a wide variety of plastics and hard baits! We have the largest selection of tackle in area and are your one stop shop for everything outdoors!
