Park Rapids Area Fishing Report
Inconsistent weather patterns have really caused the conditions and water temps to be up and down and can some days create for a tougher bite than normal this time of year. The afternoon and evening bites have been the most consistant. Water temps range from 54-60 degrees depending on lake you are on.
Walleye- The best depths this past week were 9-16 feet of water, which is showing that the fish are on the move. Look to the first breaklines near large flats, typically with wind blowing in. A lindy rig with a leech or minnow will work as well as a jig and fathead or shiner. If you can find the large schools of baitfish there will most likely be walleys following close by. Dont be afraid to fish artifical as well as jerkbaits and swimbaits have been very effective especially putting the larger fish in the boat!
Panfish- The crappie bite has really picked up in the area as they move shallow to spawn. A slip bobber and a crappie minnow work great as well as a irvs magic jig tipped with a wax worm. Blacks and pinks seem to be the most effective colors right now.
Pike - Live bait rigs with a larger sucker minnow will put fish in the boat. Also a larger float with a minnow is very effective. For those wanting to fish artificial a white spinner bait or chatter bait wont let you down! Target cabbage beds and and weed beds off points for those bigger pike! Remember to checkout the new limits for pike as well!
Leech lake Report - Traders Bay, West Goose Flats, Duck Points, Little Stoney, and the areas around Bear and Pelican Islands all had decent reports throughout the week. 1/16th and 1/8th oz jigs with shiners or redtails are still the number one producer with lindy rigs and leeches being runner up. Pay attention to jig color and cadence once again and don’t be afraid to go fast if the bite is slow. Plastics are also working and are great for creating a reaction bite.
